10 Must-Have Apps for Running a Small Business

I’m so excited to have the blog back up and running! Thank you all for your patience while I made the transition to a more versatile and elegant setting to display my new work. I hope you’ll take the time to look around the new galleries and feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

Now on to today’s topic: This one is for fellow photographers and entrepreneurs. I’ve compiled a list of the Top 10 most effective apps that I use everyday for my business. These apps are the cogs and screws that keep everything running smoothly in the background. They make it easy for me to function while I am away from home and I have peace of mind knowing that I don’t have to sit at my desktop all day in order to get anything done. I hope some of these will be helpful to any of you who are looking for a better way to organize your own business!

If you aren’t using Instagram to market your business, you are missing out on the easiest way to reach potential customers and build an online brand. I use a consistent editing style so that my work is recognizable and my feed is uniform.

Also, can we talk about hashtags for a second? I know they’re annoying, but you can drive up traffic, bring in possible business, and connect with like-minded individuals. And Instagram was kind enough to make a way to hide those unsightly tags. All you have to do is post your image (without the hashtags in the caption), create a new comment on the image, type in 5 periods on separate lines and on the 6th line you enter all of your hashtags consecutively. I normally keep all of my hashtags stored in a folder in Notes so I can copy and paste quickly.

VSCO has been my go-to Iphone editor for many years now. (I’m excited for the launch of Filmborn coming soon!!) Their presets have more of a professional, film look compared to the general ones on Instagram. And they have great tools that adjust color and light.

This App is going to be a lifesaver by the time Tax season comes back around. I’ve logged over 3,000 driving miles for business this year already. They set up the app as an easy swipe left, swipe right platform so you can track business and personal miles. It runs in the background so you don’t have to turn it on and off each time you get in your car.

My favorite way to accept and send fast payments for photo sessions, to pay my second shooters, and for everyday life. There are no fees if you pay using a bank account or debit card and you can send/receive up to $2,999 per transaction. Plus, I’ve never had a problem with my account being hacked (cough Paypal cough) and there are no ridiculous 3% fees.

I use the PASS application on my desktop to send my clients gorgeous galleries that easy to navigate and accessible for 10 years. The Iphone app makes it easy for me to pull images I want to share on social media while I’m out & about or on the road. Plus, any of my clients that have the app can easily access their images to show their friends and family.

This is the FREE accounting site I use to sending invoices, tracking payments, logging expenses, and totaling sales for the year. Wave has helped me stay organized and given me a visual representation of how profitable my business has been.

Shake has been my trusty source for generating Contracts for the past year. I am able to electronically create a custom contract on the spot and send it directly to my client to E-sign. All signed contracts are automatically stored in a database for easy reference.

Website | App Store
With this app I can view, in real-time, how many people are visiting my page, in what region, certain demographic information like age and gender, and at what time of day. It sounds a little creepy, but it is essential for me know the audience who views my site.

Website | App Store
Now that I use a WordPress platform for my site, their app makes it easy to login real quick, type up a draft post, check my stats for the day, or share posts to social media. Whatever platform you use, make sure you can edit your site from wherever you are in the world in case it needs immediate attention.

Website | App Store
I use a few different storage sites (like Dropbox and Google Drive) but this app is definitely the easiest to navigate. My phone is constantly running out of memory due to the huge image files I have on there and the app runs in the background saving my images each day. And with the touch of a button it will delete any photos on my phone that have been saved to the app.
